Sampling Pixel Color

I'm interested in sampling a pixel color or luminance value in a composition or layer so that I can use it in a layer expression. Anyone know how to do that?

The Anarchy Toolbox set of plugins ($149) from Digital Anarchy has a Color Sampler plugin that will do that. AE itself doesn't have anything like that.
